The Book Bag ProjectThe Book Bag Project is a club-hosted, long-term service project that benefits low-income, first-grade students of Pacheco Elementary in San Luis Obispo, CA. Club members make personalized book bags for students. Each student also has a book read to them by a Circle K member, and then the books and book bags are donated to the students.

Why?
As a club, Cal Poly Circle K decided that we want to grow our club’s focus on educating children, especially those who are low-income. These students are more at risk of falling behind in school than their fellow students. An easy way to educate young students is to read to them and give them the skills and support to continue reading as they get older. Students proficient in reading are more likely to be engaged in school, graduate from high school, and go to college.
Pacheco Elementary School has a large population of English learners as well as economically disadvantaged students. Unfortunately there are huge gaps in reading proficiency in these groups compared to their other classmates. The Book Bag Project aims to help reduce that gap and increase the number of students proficient in reading.
